Starbase Residents Vote to Incorporate SpaceX Launch Site as New City
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is making headlines with the incorporation of its own official company town, Starbase, located near the Starbase launch site in southern Texas. This significant development follows a recent vote where local residents overwhelmingly chose to establish Starbase as a city, highlighting the company’s influence in the region.
The Birth of Starbase, Texas
In a historic election held on Saturday, residents in the vicinity of SpaceX’s launch site cast their votes, resulting in an impressive 212 votes in favor of incorporation and only six votes against, according to the Cameron County Elections Department.
Elon Musk’s Announcement
Following the election results, Elon Musk took to his social media platform, X, to celebrate the occasion, declaring, “Starbase, Texas is now a real city!” This proclamation underscores the significance of this new city, which is primarily populated by SpaceX employees.
Local Government and Leadership
In conjunction with the city incorporation, residents also elected three officials to lead the new city government:
- Bobby Peden: Mayor
- Jordan Buss: Commissioner
- Jenna Petrzelka: Commissioner
All three candidates ran unopposed, demonstrating a strong connection between SpaceX and its workforce.
SpaceX’s Vision for Starbase
While SpaceX has not disclosed extensive details about its reasons for the incorporation, the company has indicated that it currently manages the area’s infrastructure, including roads and utilities. Furthermore, they aim to transition authority from Cameron County to the new city government, which would enable them to close nearby Boca Chica beach and state park during launch operations. This move would facilitate a more streamlined process for their ambitious space endeavors.
Musk’s Shift in Focus
In other news, Musk has recently announced a reduction of his involvement with the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, indicating he will devote only a couple of days a week to this role. His decision to relocate SpaceX’s headquarters from El Segundo, California, to Texas was partly fueled by concerns over safety and regulatory issues. Musk cited his frustrations with California’s environment and laws as key factors in his move.
Community Development
Following the election, an official account for the new city posted a message that reflects its vision: “Becoming a city will help us continue building the best community possible for the men and women building the future of humanity’s place in space.”
