Ransomware Attack Exposes Tata Technologies: Major Data Breach Uncovered

In a significant cybersecurity breach, the ransomware group Hunters International has leaked sensitive data allegedly stolen from Tata Technologies. This incident comes just over a month after the Indian firm confirmed a ransomware attack that led to the temporary suspension of various services.

Details of the Data Leak

The leaked information, made available on the gang’s dark web site, includes personal details of current and former employees, alongside confidential documents such as:

  • Purchase orders
  • Contracts with clients in India and the United States
  • Over 730,000 documents, including Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDF files

In total, the leaked data amounts to approximately 1.4 terabytes in size.

Company Response to the Ransomware Attack

In late January, Tata Technologies announced to Indian stock exchanges that it had experienced a ransomware attack affecting a few of its IT assets. Notably, the company stated that its client services remained “fully functional and unaffected throughout” the incident.

It is still uncertain whether the data posted by Hunters International is directly connected to the previous ransomware attack disclosed by Tata Technologies. To date, the company has not responded to multiple inquiries from TechCrunch.

About Tata Technologies

Established in 1989 as a part of Tata Motors, Tata Technologies became a standalone entity in 1994. It continues to operate as a subsidiary of the Tata Group. The company specializes in providing product engineering and research and development services across various sectors including:

  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Engineering

With 20 delivery centers and over 12,500 employees, Tata Technologies offers its services across 27 countries.

About Hunters International

Emerging in late 2023, Hunters International is a relatively new player in the ransomware-as-a-service landscape. This group leases its infrastructure to affiliate hackers who execute ransomware attacks, taking a portion of the ransom payments. They are believed to have connections with the Hive ransomware gang, which was significantly disrupted by law enforcement in 2023. Notably, the Hive gang had previously leaked data stolen from another company under the Tata Group, Tata Power, in 2022.
