Consumer Reports Reveals Major Security Flaws in Popular Voice Cloning Tools

In recent findings, several popular voice cloning tools have been revealed to lack essential safeguards against potential fraud and abuse. A study conducted by Consumer Reports highlights the vulnerabilities within these technologies, raising concerns about their misuse.

Overview of Voice Cloning Tools

Consumer Reports investigated voice cloning products from six notable companies: Descript, ElevenLabs, Lovo, PlayHT, Resemble AI, and Speechify. The focus of the study was to evaluate the mechanisms in place that could prevent unauthorized voice cloning.

Findings from the Study

The results indicated that only two of the companies, Descript and Resemble AI, implemented significant measures to prevent misuse. The remaining companies primarily required users to check a box confirming they had the legal right to clone a voice, which is insufficient as a safeguard.

Concerns About Voice Cloning Technology

Grace Gedye, a policy analyst at Consumer Reports, emphasized the urgent need for adequate safety measures in AI voice cloning tools. She stated, “These tools have the potential to supercharge impersonation scams if sufficient protections are not established.”

Recommendations for Improvement

To enhance the security of voice cloning technologies, companies should consider implementing the following measures:

  • Verification Processes: Establish robust identity verification systems before allowing voice cloning.
  • User Education: Provide clear guidelines on the ethical use of voice cloning.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Create mechanisms for reporting suspicious activity related to voice cloning.

Gedye concluded by stating that “our assessment shows that there are basic steps companies can take to make it harder to clone someone’s voice without their knowledge — but some companies aren’t taking them.”
