Consumer Reports Reveals Tesla and Rivian Charging Networks as the Most Reliable: A Comprehensive Analysis
The latest survey from Consumer Reports reveals that Tesla and Rivian stand out as the most reliable EV charging networks in the U.S. This insight comes from a comprehensive study involving 1,230 electric vehicle (EV) owners, highlighting the critical importance of dependable charging infrastructure for the increasing number of electric vehicle users.
Survey Highlights: Tesla and Rivian Lead the Pack
Between March 2023 and February 2024, the survey found that just 4% of Tesla Supercharger users reported issues, while only 5% of Rivian Adventure Network users faced problems. In contrast, several other charging networks struggled significantly:
- Shell’s Recharge Network: 48% of users experienced problems.
- EVgo: 43% reported issues.
- Blink: 41% faced challenges.
- Electrify America: 35% of users had difficulties.
- ChargePoint: 24% experienced problems.
These statistics underscore the ongoing challenges many EV charging networks face, with only Tesla and Rivian maintaining a low problem rate.
Growing Electric Vehicle Adoption
According to Cox Automotive, electric vehicles comprised over 8% of vehicle sales in the U.S. last year. Although growth has slowed, the overall volume of EV sales continues to rise, indicating a steady shift toward electric mobility. However, the Consumer Reports survey highlights that many charging networks are falling short in terms of reliability, which could hinder further adoption.

The survey identified several common problems that users experienced across various networks, including:
- Payment Processing Issues: Many users faced difficulties when making payments.
- Hardware Malfunctions: Problems with charging station hardware, particularly with screens, were frequently reported.
Drew Toher, campaign manager at Consumer Reports, emphasized the importance of community feedback, stating, “By calling out broken screens, payment issues, and slow charging power, community members are crowdsourcing data that will hold charging networks accountable and improve drivers’ experience with public charging.”

Tesla has spent over a decade developing its Supercharger network, leading to a refined and reliable charging experience. This is particularly beneficial for non-Tesla EV owners, as Tesla has opened its Supercharger network to all electric vehicles.
Interestingly, Rivian’s performance in this survey indicates that it is matching Tesla’s reliability, which is promising news for the brand as it rolls out its first 100 charging stations. Maintaining this level of quality will be crucial as Rivian plans to expand to an additional 500 stations across North America.
