Epic Games Launches Innovative Webshops for Developers to Bypass App Store Fees Following Recent Ruling

Epic Games is celebrating a significant milestone after achieving a crucial victory in its ongoing legal battle with Apple. This win paves the way for the Epic Games Store to allow developers to establish their own webshops, enabling players to make out-of-app purchases and avoid hefty fees from Apple and Google.

Epic Games’ Legal Triumph Against Apple

The legal confrontation between Epic Games and Apple has been a lengthy saga, primarily centered around the 30% commission fees imposed by Apple on developers through its iOS App Store. In a landmark ruling in 2021, a judge determined that Apple could not prevent developers from directing customers to purchase digital goods outside of its ecosystem. However, in a recent filing, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers expressed frustration over Apple’s alleged non-compliance with her previous ruling.

Fortnite’s Return to the iOS App Store

As a result of this victory, Epic Games is set to bring back its flagship game, Fortnite, to the iOS App Store. The company aims to encourage users to buy digital items directly through Epic, offering them better pricing options.

New Webshop Feature for Developers

With the introduction of the new webshop feature on the Epic Games Store, developers can now more easily set up their own sales platforms. This change is expected to significantly benefit the gaming community by providing:

  • More competitive pricing for digital goods
  • Increased revenue potential for developers
  • A streamlined process for out-of-app purchases

Developer-Friendly Revenue Sharing Model

Traditionally, Epic Games has taken a 12% cut from developers’ earnings on its platform, which is already more favorable than Apple’s terms. Starting in June, Epic will implement an even more attractive policy: it will not take any cut from the first $1 million each game earns annually. Once a game surpasses this revenue threshold, Epic will begin to take its percentage.

Empowering Developers Post-Legal Ruling

Epic Games stated, “With new legal rulings in place, developers will be able to send players from games to make digital purchases from webshops on any platform that allows it, including iOS in the European Union and United States.” This change will empower developers and enhance the overall gaming experience for users.
