Friend’s AI Companion Pendant Faces Shipment Delays: What You Need to Know

Friend, an innovative startup known for its AI-powered necklace priced at $99, is set to revolutionize the concept of digital companionship. However, the company has announced a delay in shipping its first batch of devices to customers, pushing the timeline to Q3 of this year.

Shipping Delays for the AI Necklace

Initially, Friend aimed to fulfill pre-orders by Q1. However, co-founder and CEO Avi Schiffman revealed in an email to customers that this timeline is no longer feasible. He stated:

“As much as I would like to have shipped in Q1 of this year, I still have refinements to do, and unfortunately you can only start manufacturing electronics when you are 95% done with your design.”

Schiffman estimated that the prototype will be completed by the end of February, allowing them to commence the final preparations for production.

Investment and Development Journey

Friend boasts an eight-member engineering team and has successfully raised $8.5 million from various investors, including Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity. The startup garnered attention last fall when it invested $1.8 million in the domain name Friend.com.

Launch of Chatbot Experience

As part of a unique experiment, Friend introduced a web platform on Friend.com, enabling users to interact with various AI characters. However, the reception was mixed. TechRadar’s Eric Schwartz reported that some chatbots began conversations with unexpected and distressing personal anecdotes, leading to an unusual user experience.

In his email, Schiffman also announced plans to discontinue the chatbot feature:

“We’re glad that millions got to play around with what I believe to be the most realistic chatbot out there. This has really proven our internal ability to manage traffic and has taught us a lot about digital companionship. But I want us to stay focused on solely the hardware.”

Concerns Surrounding AI Companionship

The concept of AI companions has sparked significant debate. Platforms like Character.AI, which is backed by Google, have faced lawsuits over allegations of causing psychological harm to children. Experts warn that reliance on AI companions might exacerbate feelings of isolation by replacing genuine human connections, potentially leading to harmful content and mental health issues.
