Google Ends Support for Early Nest Thermostats: What You Need to Know by October 25

In a significant move for smart home technology enthusiasts, Google has announced that it will discontinue support for the first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats starting October 25. This decision impacts not only updates for older models but also the availability of new Nest products in Europe.

End of Support for Older Nest Thermostats

Owners of the first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats, which were launched in 2011 and 2012 respectively, will no longer receive software updates. This includes the models released in Europe in 2014. Consequently, these users will lose access to support through the Nest and Home apps, although they will still be able to manually adjust temperature settings and schedules directly on their devices.

Google’s Statement on the Transition

Google emphasized the need for this transition, stating:

“To fully invest in [future] advancements and bring you the most cutting-edge features on our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting three of our oldest devices, each over a decade old.”

Why No New Nest Products in Europe?

The decision to halt the launch of new Nest products in Europe stems from the unique challenges posed by heating systems in the region. As Google explained:

  • European homes have diverse hardware and software requirements.
  • These variations complicate the development of compatible products for the market.

Despite this change, existing Nest devices will continue to be available in Europe until supplies run out.

What This Means for Nest Users

For current Nest thermostat owners, it is crucial to understand the implications of these changes:

  1. No more software updates will be provided for older devices.
  2. Support through the Nest and Home apps will be discontinued.
  3. Users can still manually adjust settings on their thermostats.
