Google’s Gemini Triumphs Over Pokémon Blue: A New Era in AI Gaming!

Google’s latest AI innovation, Gemini 2.5 Pro, has achieved a significant milestone by completing the classic video game Pokémon Blue. This achievement highlights the advancements in AI technology and its applications in gaming.

Google’s AI Triumph in Gaming

Last night, Google CEO Sundar Pichai celebrated this accomplishment on X, stating, “What a finish! Gemini 2.5 Pro just completed Pokémon Blue!” However, it’s important to note that the Gemini Plays Pokémon livestream was orchestrated by Joel Z, a 30-year-old software engineer unaffiliated with Google.

Support from Google Executives

Google executives have been vocal in their support for the project. For instance, Logan Kilpatrick, the product lead for Google AI Studio, revealed that Gemini was making remarkable progress in the game. He mentioned that Gemini had earned its 5th badge, while its closest competitor had only managed 3 badges so far. Pichai humorously commented on the development, “We are working on API, Artificial Pokémon Intelligence :)”

Why Pokémon?

The choice of Pokémon as a testing ground for AI is intriguing. In February, Anthropic highlighted that its Claude AI models were making strides in Pokémon Red, showcasing how extended thinking and agent training can significantly enhance performance in unexpected tasks.

  • Pokémon Red and Blue are two versions of the same GameBoy title released in 1996.
  • Joel Z’s inspiration came from a Twitch channel called Claude Plays Pokémon.

Comparing AI Models: Gemini vs. Claude

While Gemini has completed Pokémon Blue, Claude has yet to conquer Pokémon Red. However, Joel Z cautions against drawing direct comparisons: “Please don’t consider this a benchmark for how well an LLM can play Pokémon. You can’t really make direct comparisons — Gemini and Claude have different tools and receive different information.”

The Role of Agent Harnesses

Both AI models require assistance to navigate the game effectively. This is where agent harnesses come into play, providing necessary game screenshots combined with additional information. This setup allows the AI to determine its next move, which may involve engaging specialized agents to execute commands.

Development Insights

Joel Z acknowledged that various “dev interventions” were made to help Gemini complete the game, but he insisted that these adjustments should not be considered cheating. He explained, “My interventions improve Gemini’s overall decision-making and reasoning abilities. I don’t give specific hints — there are no walkthroughs or direct instructions for challenges like Mt. Moon.”

He also noted that “Gemini Plays Pokémon is still actively being developed, and the framework continues to evolve.” This ongoing improvement will likely lead to even more impressive feats in the future.
