OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever has launched a groundbreaking AI startup, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), which aims to develop safe and superintelligent AI systems. This innovative venture has partnered with Google Cloud to utilize its TPU chips, significantly enhancing SSI’s research capabilities. The announcement, made on Wednesday, underscores the collaboration between leading tech entities in the AI domain.

Safe Superintelligence is leveraging Google Cloud’s powerful TPU chips to accelerate its research and development efforts. This collaboration is pivotal for SSI as it strives to build a safer AI infrastructure. According to a statement from Google Cloud, the partnership is central to SSI’s mission of creating advanced AI technologies.

The Race for AI Unicorns

Cloud service providers are actively pursuing a select group of AI startups that invest heavily in computing power to train their models. The partnership between SSI and Google Cloud indicates that SSI will likely allocate a significant portion of its computing budget to Google Cloud. A source familiar with the situation revealed to TechCrunch that Google Cloud is SSI’s primary computing provider.

History of Google Cloud Partnerships

Google Cloud has a track record of forming collaborations with former AI researchers who have transitioned into leading billion-dollar startups. Notably, Sutskever previously worked at Google, which strengthens the ties between the two organizations. In a similar vein, Google Cloud announced its role as the primary computing provider for World Labs, established by ex-Google Cloud AI chief scientist Fei-Fei Li, in October.

Future Collaborations Uncertain

As of now, it remains unclear whether Safe Superintelligence has established partnerships with other cloud or computing providers. A representative from Google Cloud declined to provide additional comments, and a spokesperson from SSI has yet to respond to inquiries about potential collaborations.

About Safe Superintelligence

Safe Superintelligence officially emerged from stealth mode in June 2024, shortly after Sutskever’s departure from his role at OpenAI. The startup has secured $1 billion in funding from notable investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and SV Angel.

Since its inception, information about SSI’s activities has been limited. However, the company states on its website that developing safe and superintelligent AI is “our mission, our name, and our entire product roadmap, because it is our sole focus.” Sutskever has expressed his commitment to exploring new methods for enhancing the performance of advanced AI models.

Sutskever’s Journey in AI

Prior to co-founding OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever dedicated several years to researching neural networks at Google Brain. He played a crucial role in AI safety at OpenAI and was involved in the controversial ousting of CEO Sam Altman in November 2023. Following this incident, Sutskever participated in efforts to reinstate Altman as CEO.

After a period of absence from OpenAI’s offices, Sutskever made the decision to leave and embark on his new venture, Safe Superintelligence.
