The salary for this AI position ranges from $10,000 to $15,000. While this amount may be modest compared to what human developers earn, it could be considered a substantial sum for an entity that requires no basic necessities like food or shelter.

Insights from Firecrawl’s Founders

Founders Caleb Peffer and Nicolas Silberstein Camara clarified to TechCrunch that the job posting was a blend of a PR stunt and an innovative experiment.

Peffer stated, “We are currently looking for incredible AI engineers. Humans who are good at building AI systems. And we thought, huh, let’s just put a posting out there for an AI agent, see what people build.”

Peffer noted, “We would have loved to put one of these in production, but none of them were up to our standards. We’re going to make another job posting in this manner and actively look for AI agents capable of accomplishing our tasks.”

Interestingly, the founders, who are college friends with computer science degrees from the University of New Hampshire, initially sought acceptance into Y Combinator with a different idea: an educational tool for teaching coding.

Upon entering Y Combinator, they pivoted their focus after receiving feedback about the saturated edtech market. This led them to develop a chatbot that assists developers in navigating documentation, eventually resulting in the creation of their web crawler.
