Lucid Motors Triumphs in Bankruptcy Auction, Acquiring Nikola’s Arizona Factory and Key Assets

Lucid Motors, the innovative electric vehicle (EV) startup, has made headlines by winning the bankruptcy auction for Nikola’s Arizona factory and several key assets. This unexpected move positions Lucid to expand its manufacturing capabilities while navigating the challenges of the electric trucking market.

Lucid Motors Acquires Nikola’s Assets

According to a court filing released late Thursday, Lucid Motors committed approximately $30 million in cash and non-cash considerations to secure Nikola’s factory, its lease on the Phoenix headquarters, and various machinery, equipment, and inventory.

Job Offers for Former Nikola Employees

As part of this strategic acquisition, Lucid plans to extend job offers to around 300 former Nikola employees. These positions will encompass roles in:

  • Manufacturing
  • Engineering
  • Software Development
  • Assembly
  • Vehicle Testing
  • Warehouse Support

In a statement to TechCrunch, Lucid’s interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, emphasized the significance of this acquisition: “As we continue our production ramp of Lucid Gravity and prepare for our upcoming midsize platform vehicles, acquiring these assets is an opportunity to strategically expand our manufacturing, warehousing, testing, and development facilities while supporting our local Arizona community.”

Details of the Auction Process

Lucid Motors outbid three unnamed competitors in the auction, which began on April 7 and involved multiple rounds. Interestingly, the startup will not acquire any of Nikola’s hydrogen trucking assets or its customer base. This is particularly noteworthy given that Nikola has focused primarily on hydrogen-powered vehicles, a market Lucid has yet to enter.

Background on Nikola’s Bankruptcy

Nikola, having filed for bankruptcy protection in February, has been seeking to sell its entire business. The company faced scrutiny when its founder, Trevor Milton, was convicted of fraud in 2022 but was later pardoned by President Trump in March. Milton also attempted to submit a bid for Nikola’s assets, but the court intervened to prevent him from inspecting the factory prior to the auction.

Lucid’s Strategic Expansion in Arizona

Lucid Motors already operates a factory in nearby Casa Grande, Arizona, and sees significant value in acquiring additional warehousing space, testing equipment, and skilled employees. This move aligns with Lucid’s goal of enhancing its production efficiency and expanding its operations.

Next Steps in the Auction Process

While Lucid Motors is the leading bidder for Nikola’s assets, the bankruptcy judge has allowed objections to the sale to be filed until 12:00 p.m. ET on April 11. A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET, where the final decision will be made.
