Mastering Apple: A Simple Guide to Disable Intelligence-Powered Notification Summaries
With the release of iOS 18, Apple has introduced an innovative feature known as Apple Intelligence, which includes an AI-driven capability to summarize notifications. This feature aims to enhance user experience by consolidating multiple notifications from a single app into a single card that appears on your lock screen.
How Apple Intelligence Works
When you receive numerous notifications from one application, the notification summary feature compiles the key content into a single, convenient card. Users can either dismiss the stack after reviewing the summary or tap on it to access individual notifications.
Limitations of Notification Summaries
While this feature is designed to streamline notification management, it is not without its flaws. Users have reported that the summaries can sometimes lead to amusing misunderstandings and may not accurately represent the content of the notifications.
- Inaccuracies: The summaries may contain errors or fail to encapsulate the essence of the notifications.
- Confusion: Some users find the summaries more confusing than helpful.
How to Manage Notification Summaries on iOS Devices
If you find the notification summaries more troublesome than beneficial, you can easily disable or customize this feature. Here’s how:
On iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Tap on the Summarize Notifications tab.
- You can disable AI-powered summaries for all apps by toggling off the Summarize Notifications option at the top or manage notifications on a per-app basis.
On Mac
- Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner.
- Select System Settings and go to Notifications.
- Click the Summarize Notifications tab and toggle it off.
- Similar to iPhone/iPad, you can manage notification summaries for specific applications.
Limitations on Customization
It’s important to note that there currently isn’t an option to disable notification summaries for specific app categories, such as news, productivity, or finance. This limitation can be frustrating for users who wish to manage notifications more granularly.
Upcoming Updates from Apple
In response to user feedback, Apple announced in January that it plans to release a software update aimed at clarifying that notification summaries are AI-generated and may contain errors. This update is expected to improve the overall user experience.
