Meta’s Strategic Expansion in India: Thriving Amidst Recent Layoffs

Meta has been in the spotlight recently after announcing plans to reduce its workforce by 5%, labeling some employees as “low performers.” Despite these job cuts, the tech giant is actively expanding its footprint in certain regions, particularly in Bengaluru, India, a burgeoning tech hub.

Meta’s Expansion in Bengaluru

Multiple Meta employees have recently shared on LinkedIn that the company is establishing a new office in Bengaluru, which is known for its vibrant technology scene. According to Meta’s careers webpage, the company is currently seeking to fill 41 job openings in this location, the majority of which have been posted in the last month.

Job Opportunities Available

The available positions primarily focus on:

  • Software Engineering
  • Machine Learning Engineering
  • Chip Design for Data Centers

One notable opening is for an “Experienced Engineering Director,” tasked with leading the engineering team in India. This role, advertised on LinkedIn three weeks ago, emphasizes the need for a strategy to recruit and build foundational engineering teams while also crafting a visionary plan for engineering in the region.

Role within Meta’s Structure

This new center will be part of Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team, focusing on creating custom internal tools rather than Meta’s consumer-facing products like Facebook and Instagram. Currently, while Meta has several offices across India—including locations in Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Mumbai—most openings are concentrated in non-engineering roles.

Current Job Landscape

According to Meta’s careers page, only one out of twelve available positions at other Indian offices is related to engineering. A spokesperson from Meta India confirmed to TechCrunch that they are recruiting for a “small number of engineering positions in Bengaluru,” highlighting the company’s commitment to adjusting its workforce strategy to align with long-term growth plans.

Shift in Engineering Strategy

The 41 job openings in Bengaluru, while a small fraction of Meta’s total global job postings exceeding 1,700, mark a significant shift in the company’s approach. Historically, Meta has not utilized India as a primary engineering hub, with most engineering roles based in North America and Europe.

This shift is noteworthy, especially considering past instances, such as when an Indian software engineer made headlines after being laid off by Meta just two days after relocating to Canada for work. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that the company intends to backfill positions that were eliminated during the recent layoffs, affirming a commitment to growth even amid workforce reductions.
