OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Reveals GPU Shortage Crisis: What It Means for AI Development

OpenAI’s latest innovation, GPT-4.5, has generated significant buzz in the tech industry, but the rollout has faced unexpected challenges. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently revealed that the company is currently experiencing a shortage of GPUs, which has necessitated a staggered launch of this highly anticipated model.

Challenges in the Launch of GPT-4.5

In a recent update on X, Altman explained that the immense size and cost of GPT-4.5 are contributing factors to its delayed release. He emphasized that the model requires “tens of thousands” more GPUs before it can be made available to all users. ChatGPT Pro subscribers will be the first to access GPT-4.5 starting Thursday, followed by ChatGPT Plus customers the following week.

Pricing Structure of GPT-4.5

Due to its advanced capabilities, GPT-4.5 comes with a hefty price tag:

  • Input cost: $75 per million tokens (approximately 750,000 words)
  • Output cost: $150 per million tokens

This pricing represents a significant increase compared to OpenAI’s previous model, GPT-4, with input costs being 30 times higher and output costs 15 times higher.

Future Plans to Overcome GPU Shortages

Altman acknowledged the difficulties posed by the GPU shortage, stating, “We’ve been growing a lot and are out of GPUs. We will add tens of thousands of GPUs next week and roll it out to the Plus tier then.” He expressed that while this situation is not ideal, predicting such rapid growth surges that lead to GPU shortages is challenging.

In response to these limitations, OpenAI is taking strategic steps to enhance its hardware capabilities. The company is planning to:

  1. Develop its own AI chips
  2. Establish a vast network of data centers
