Saronic Secures $600M to Revolutionize Autonomous Warship Production
Austin-based defense startup Saronic has successfully raised an impressive $600 million in Series C funding to establish an autonomous ship factory known as “Port Alpha.” This significant funding round has quadrupled Saronic’s valuation to $4 billion compared to its previous funding round.
Investment Details and Valuation Surge
The latest funding round was led by investor Elad Gil, with notable participation from General Catalyst and existing investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, 8VC, and Caffeinated Capital.
Position in the Defense Tech Sector
This funding achievement positions Saronic as potentially the second or third most valuable defense tech startup in the U.S. market. For context, Anduril recently reached a valuation of $14 billion, while Shield AI is reportedly in discussions to achieve a $5 billion valuation in its upcoming funding round. Additionally, Anduril is exploring further fundraising efforts that could elevate its valuation to $28 billion.
Future Plans for Port Alpha
Saronic is not alone in its ambition to revolutionize defense manufacturing; last month, Anduril unveiled plans for a billion-dollar megafactory in Ohio. While Saronic has yet to secure a location for Port Alpha, a spokesperson confirmed that they are actively seeking a site. According to co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas, operations at the futuristic shipyard are expected to commence within the next five years, as reported by Defense News.
Innovative Ship Models
Saronic has already developed three models of autonomous surface vessels (ASVs), each measuring up to 24 feet long—approximately half the length of a modern lifeboat. The company aims to expand its production to include larger unmanned ships, thereby enhancing the U.S. shipbuilding capacity in comparison to China.
The Rise of Unmanned Naval Technology
The trend towards unmanned ships is gaining momentum in naval warfare. Notably, Ukraine’s effective use of drone ships to challenge the Russian Navy in Crimea showcases the potential of these technologies, despite Ukraine lacking a significant manned navy.

With this latest funding, Saronic has raised nearly $850 million to date. Mavrookas highlighted that the rapid development of new vessels and innovative software has significantly contributed to the company’s remarkable valuation increase, as discussed on CNBC.
