Self Inspection Secures $3M Investment to Revolutionize Vehicle Inspections with AI Technology

As the demand for efficient vehicle inspections grows, numerous startups are striving to revolutionize this sector. Among them, Self Inspection, a San Diego-based startup, stands out with its innovative AI-driven solution. Recently, the company has secured significant funding, positioning itself to transform the vehicle inspection landscape.

Self Inspection Secures $3 Million Seed Funding

Founded in 2021, Self Inspection is excited to announce a successful seed funding round of $3 million, co-led by Costanoa Ventures and DVx Ventures, the venture firm established by former Tesla president Jon McNeill. The funding round also saw participation from Westlake Financial, a company responsible for over one million vehicle transactions each year.

Innovative Technology for the Vehicle Inspection Market

Karim Bousta, a partner at DVx Ventures, emphasizes the potential for innovation in traditional vehicle inspections. He stated, “Self Inspection’s technology not only streamlines operations for auto lenders, dealerships, and rental companies but also establishes a new standard for quality and reliability in the $30 billion vehicle inspection market.”

According to CEO Constantine Yaremtso, this funding validates the technology Self Inspection has developed over the years. The company already counts Avis and CarOffer as clients, along with Westlake Financial.

Expanding the Business Model

Yaremtso expressed plans for expansion, stating, “We’re going to start expanding, growing, and scaling.” This marks a strategic shift from competitors like UVEye, which recently raised $191 million for its AI-powered inspection technology.

  • Self Inspection primarily utilizes a smartphone camera for inspections.
  • The software can access additional data from a vehicle’s OBD2 port.
  • The company has trained its AI on one of the largest datasets of damaged vehicles.

Comprehensive Vehicle Inspection Reports

Self Inspection’s AI models are capable of swiftly identifying vehicle damage and assessing its severity. This technology generates detailed cost estimates and thorough inspection reports, which include:

  • A comprehensive PDF report similar to those from body shops.
  • Details on necessary labor and repair costs.
  • Specific parts needed for repairs.

Yaremtso highlighted that their service is designed to be configurable and user-friendly, distinguishing it from competitors like Ravin.

Customizable Features for Clients

Self Inspection’s software offers a customizable experience, allowing clients to prioritize specific areas of inspection. For example, fleet operators or vehicle marketplaces can add steps to check EV charging cables or focus on high-wear areas simply by dragging and dropping options within the software.

Ease of Use

The platform is designed for simplicity, allowing users to take photos or videos without needing to maintain a specific distance from the vehicle, unlike other services. Currently, Self Inspection is not a standalone app; it integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, enabling inspections via a smartphone web browser after receiving a text or email link.

Yaremtso explained, “Everyone has a good camera and knows how to capture photos. We aim to provide this tool to marketplaces and banks, making vehicle inspections straightforward and speeding up the sales process.”
