Snap Enhances Spectacles: Introducing GPS and Hand-Tracking Features for an Elevated Experience

Snap Inc. has recently made waves in the augmented reality (AR) landscape with its Spectacles, the latest generation of AR glasses designed for developers. Just six months after launching the fifth generation, Snap is enhancing these innovative glasses with exciting new features and Lenses.

New Features for Snap Spectacles

On Monday, Snap announced a series of updates aimed at enriching the user experience with its Spectacles. The new enhancements include:

  • GPS Integration: Developers can now create Lenses that utilize GPS, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), and compass heading.
  • Custom Locations: The ability to set custom geo-locations for unique AR experiences.
  • Hand-Tracking Capabilities: Improved gesture detection, including recognizing grab gestures and identifying when users are holding their phones.
  • Leaderboards: Developers can now incorporate competition features into their Lenses.
  • AR Keyboard: A new feature that enhances interaction with the AR environment.

Enhanced Location-Based Experiences

The primary goal of these updates is to enhance location-based experiences with Spectacles. One notable example highlighted by Snap is the NavigatAR from Utopia Labs, which guides users via Snap Map Tiles, displaying glowing arrows to help them navigate to their destinations.

Accessibility and Future Goals

Currently, Snap’s Spectacles are only available through its developer program, which costs $99 per month. However, in a bid to broaden access, Snap has introduced a 50% discount for educators and students. This strategic move underscores Snap’s ambition to democratize AR experiences and compete with major tech rivals such as Apple, Google, and Meta.

Exciting Competitions for Developers

Alongside these updates, Snap has launched the Spectacles Community Challenges. Starting April 1, developers who own Spectacles can participate for a chance to win a share of $20,000 by creating the top 10 best Lenses each month. This initiative aims to foster creativity and innovation within the developer community.
