Surf Browser’s Latest Beta: Seamless Integration with Bluesky for an Enhanced Social Web Experience
Surf, the innovative app developed by Flipboard for exploring the open social web, is significantly enhancing its features by integrating support for Bluesky’s social network. The recent update, known as “Blue Wave,” allows users to log in with their Bluesky credentials and access their personalized feeds directly within the Surf app.
Introducing the Blue Wave Update
On Monday, Flipboard announced the launch of the Blue Wave beta software, which enables users to view all their Bluesky feeds in one place. This includes:
- Your following feed
- Discover feed
- Custom feeds pinned in the Bluesky app
Custom Feed Creation with Bluesky
The new integration features additional Bluesky sources that enhance user experience when building custom feeds. Users can now access:
- Bluesky’s Starter Packs: Lists of recommended followers
- Lists and Custom Feeds for personalized content
With this functionality, Surf serves as a robust alternative to the Bluesky app itself. Users can interact with Bluesky posts by liking, replying, and reposting, while also seeing likes and replies from Bluesky users displayed in Surf.
CEO Insights: A Unified Social Experience
Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard, emphasized that Surf offers “seamless access” to posts from various platforms including Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads. He believes that apps like Surf present a valuable alternative to centralized social media, which is increasingly cluttered with AI-generated content.
“The AI overrun is just brutal,” McCue remarked. “This is why I really think RSS is so important, as it connects users with authentic content from real people. By being selective about the sources you follow, you can filter out unwanted noise and focus on meaningful connections.”
New Features to Enhance User Experience
Another exciting feature in the beta update is a setup wizard designed to assist users in creating custom home feeds. This feature aims to simplify the process of:
- Combining feeds from different platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky
- Filtering out unwanted content, such as political posts
Users can even toggle switches to hide posts related to specific individuals, like Donald Trump or Elon Musk, catering to those who prefer a distraction-free browsing experience.
Building Personalized Feeds with Surf
Surf excels at allowing users to create tailored topical feeds that integrate posts from various open social networks and protocols. This means you can follow the topics and people that interest you without being confined to a single platform.
For instance, one of McCue’s curated feeds, titled “Tech Builders and Thinkers,” includes content from individuals across Mastodon, Bluesky, and YouTube.
Privacy and Customization Options
Currently, all created feeds are public, enabling users to follow feeds made by others. However, McCue plans to introduce privacy options in the future, allowing users to control which feeds they share. Users can also customize the design and layout of their feeds, selecting cover images, background colors, and default tabs.
Depending on your preferences, you can set your feeds to different viewing modes, such as “Discuss,” “Look,” “Listen,” “Watch,” or “Read,” catering to specific content types.
The Future of Surf and Bluesky Integration
As developers continue to create apps resembling TikTok or Instagram for Bluesky, Surf provides a comprehensive solution without the need for separate applications. The Surf Blue Wave beta update was first showcased at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, and will soon be available to a new group of beta testers.
Additionally, Flipboard is working on expanding the currently iOS-only Surf app to the web, making it accessible to a broader audience.
