Tessell Secures $60M Funding to Revolutionize Scalable Data Management Solutions
Tessell, an innovative startup specializing in multi-cloud database-as-a-service, has successfully raised $60 million in its latest funding round, spearheaded by WestBridge Capital. This substantial investment comes as Tessell gears up to broaden its market reach and introduce an AI-powered conversational database management service.
The Growing Need for Efficient Database Solutions
As the demand for data management escalates, numerous companies face challenges in efficiently storing and managing their data. Traditional database solutions often lack the flexibility needed to adapt across various cloud providers. Additionally, many managed database services are prohibitively expensive, charging high fees for optimal performance.
Tessell’s Innovative Approach
Tessell seeks to address these challenges with its cutting-edge platform. Leveraging extensive database kernel experience from its co-founders, the startup aims to enhance operational database management while competing against established relational database services like Amazon’s RDS.
Insights from Leadership
Co-founder and CEO Bala Kuchibhotla, who previously spent over a decade at Oracle and four years at Nutanix, stated, “Tessell is a tessellation of enterprise data.” His vision for Tessell emerged from a desire to “reimagine” operational data management and tackle the issues prevalent in current database management services.
Performance and Cost Efficiency
Tessell boasts impressive performance metrics, claiming to deliver 10 times the performance of existing database management services while achieving a 64-73% cost saving within a three-year total cost of ownership. This efficiency is attributed to its advanced NVMe infrastructure, which eliminates traditional input-output operations per second (IOPS) metering, resulting in:
- High IOPS
- Low latency
- Price predictability
Moreover, Tessell ensures zero downtime during migrations, maintaining continuous database availability even if one cloud service experiences issues.
Compatibility with Major Cloud Providers
Tessell’s platform is compatible with all four leading cloud service providers:
- AWS
- Google Cloud
- Microsoft Azure
- Oracle Cloud
Additionally, it supports various popular database engines, including:
- MySQL
- Oracle
- Microsoft SQL Server
- PostgreSQL
- MongoDB
Kuchibhotla emphasized that for AI applications, users can efficiently scale databases up or down on the Tessell infrastructure, accommodating both traditional databases with vector extensions and standalone vector databases.
Funding and Future Plans
Tessell’s recent all-equity Series B funding round, which also saw participation from B37 Ventures, Rocketship.vc, and existing investor Lightspeed Venture Partners, is poised to accelerate the development of its AI-powered conversational technology designed to streamline data management further.
Based in San Ramon, with an additional office in Bengaluru, Tessell currently employs around 143 individuals and serves 40 customers, two-thirds of which are located in India. Notable clients include Moody’s, Aditya Birla Capital, Tata Capital, Jubilant Ingrevia, and Forbes.
Expanding Horizons
With the recent funding, Tessell plans to:
- Enter the European and Asia-Pacific markets
- Enhance its go-to-market strategy to scale operations in the U.S. and India
- Invest more in research and development to refine its services
Additionally, the startup is considering analytics as a potential new line of business, enabling companies to analyze data from platforms like Snowflake, Google BigQuery, or Microsoft Fabric using Tessell’s capabilities.
