Unlocking Google Search’s New ‘AI Mode’: Ask Complex, Multi-Part Questions with Ease!

Google has introduced an exciting new feature called “AI Mode” in Search, aimed at enhancing user experience by allowing complex inquiries similar to those found in popular platforms like Perplexity AI and ChatGPT. This innovative mode enables users to ask intricate, multi-part questions and follow-up queries to delve deeper into various topics directly within Google Search.

Introducing AI Mode: A New Era in Google Search

Launched on Wednesday, AI Mode is currently available to Google One AI Premium subscribers through Search Labs, the company’s experimental platform. This feature utilizes a customized version of Gemini 2.0 and is designed to enhance the way users gather information by providing detailed comparisons and insights.

How AI Mode Works

AI Mode is particularly beneficial for exploring complex queries that require advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities. For instance, you can inquire: “What’s the difference in sleep tracking features between a smart ring, smartwatch, and tracking mat?” The AI will provide a comprehensive comparison of each product’s offerings, complete with links to relevant articles.

Users can also ask follow-up questions, such as: “What happens to your heart rate during deep sleep?” This capability allows for a more dynamic search experience, as opposed to the traditional method that often necessitated multiple queries.

Enhanced Information Retrieval

With AI Mode, you gain access not only to web content but also to real-time data sources such as:

  • The Knowledge Graph
  • Real-world information
  • Shopping data for billions of products

Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, highlighted that users are engaging with longer queries and frequently asking follow-up questions, thus enhancing their search experience. This feature aims to tackle more complex inquiries effectively.

Improving Accuracy and Reliability

AI Mode employs a “query fan-out” technique, executing multiple related searches across various data sources to compile coherent responses. Stein emphasized that the model prioritizes factual accuracy and verifies information, especially in sensitive areas like health.

When uncertain, AI Mode may provide a list of relevant web links instead of a definitive answer, ensuring users receive the most helpful information depending on the context.

Future Enhancements

As an experimental feature, Google plans to refine AI Mode continuously, focusing on enhancing user experience and functionality. Upcoming improvements include:

  • More visual elements in responses
  • Incorporation of user-generated content
  • Smart hyperlinking for actions (e.g., booking tickets)
  • Emphasis on multimedia for how-to queries

To access AI Mode, Google One AI Premium subscribers can opt into Search Labs, enter a question in the Search bar, and select the “AI Mode” tab. Alternatively, they can visit google.com/aimode. Mobile users can access the feature via the Google app by tapping the “AI Mode” icon below the Search bar on their home screen.

Additional Updates from Google

In conjunction with the AI Mode announcement, Google has also unveiled updates for Gemini 2.0 in AI Overviews, which now assist with more challenging inquiries, including coding, advanced math, and multimodal queries. Notably, users no longer need to sign in to access AI Overviews, and this feature is now available to teen users as well.

Stay tuned for more updates as Google continues to evolve its search capabilities and enhance the user experience with AI advancements.
