FCA Intensifies Efforts to Combat Misleading Financial Promotions: Doubling Down on Enforcement Actions

The financial watchdog has identified significant issues surrounding cryptoasset promotions, debt solutions, and claims management companies (CMCs). In 2024 alone, there were a staggering 9,197 CMC promotions withdrawn, particularly those concerning housing disrepair and motor finance claims aimed at vulnerable consumers. This highlights the urgent need for better regulation in the financial sector.

Key Findings from the FCA Report

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has expressed deep concern over the rising number of problematic promotions. Here are the main areas of focus:

  • Withdrawn Promotions: A total of 9,197 CMC promotions were removed in 2024.
  • Targeted Vulnerable Consumers: Many of these promotions were related to sensitive issues like housing disrepair and motor finance.
  • Need for Social Media Oversight: The FCA is urging social media platforms to play a more proactive role in identifying and curbing illegal financial promotions.

Action Against ‘Finfluencers’

In a bid to combat misleading financial promotions, the FCA launched a targeted initiative against finfluencers last year. This resulted in:

  • 20 Interviews Under Caution: Authorities interviewed 20 individuals connected to illegal promotions.

FCA’s Commitment to Consumer Protection

Lucy Castledine, the Director of Consumer Investments at the FCA, emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance: “We expect firms to take the necessary steps to meet standards and will continue to work with other bodies, including social media platforms, to prevent illegal promotions being pushed at consumers.”
